NEWS from the PREZ

Happy New Year, everyone. I hope you all had great holidays whether frantic or quiet, and Santa was good to all of you. I drove by Riverside Golf Club a few days before Christmas and there was green grass and flags on the greens. Last week, the flags were gone, but the grass was still green. That has all changed now that we have had our first real snow. Many courses stayed open until the holidays and people were out there on a regular basis. Harris Golf looked at the New Year’s weekend forecast, opened up 4 of their courses and hosted New Year’s Day tournaments for 250 players. I drove across Massachusetts that day under sunny skies and 52 degree temperatures, eyeing courses along the Mass. Pike and wishing I had my clubs with me.
The 2012 SMWGA season is well organized and not too far away. The schedule is on the website and looks great. We are happy to announce that the MSGA has offered to host 3 Saturday tournaments for women this year. We will form our own teams and play in a separate division. It’s a great way for working women to compete in more events and everyone enjoys the team format. We hope to increase participation and membership. These events will also count as qualifiers for the championships. We will get those dates and sites added to the schedule soon.
2012 will also be the first year of a combined championship for all women golfers. We have been meeting with members of the WMSGA for over a year and will host the first Maine Women’s Amateur in July at the Augusta Country Club. The format will be very similar to our previous championship with the addition of a third day of competition. This is NOT a first step in combining the two organizations, but an effort to raise the level of respect for women’s golf in Maine, by recognizing the best golfers in the state at one playing field.
The booklet will be going to the press in a couple of months, so please update us if your rep. or her information has changed. Check your club information as well and make sure we have a good street address for the GPS followers.
The board will meet in early February, so if you have anything you want on our agenda, please email it to me.
Enjoy the winter and if you are someplace warm, think of those of us in Maine.
